Getty Images’ first Sports Photography Traineeship in Australia will give an emerging photographer hand‑on experience building a career in sports photography.
Sydney – October 6, 2026: Getty Images (OTCPK:GETY), a preeminent global visual content creator and marketplace, today announced a partnership with Nikon Australia to launch its first Sports Photography Traineeship in Australia. Designed to help develop the next generation of sports visual storytellers, the traineeship will provide an aspiring photographer with hands‑on experience covering live sporting events while learning from some of the industry’s leading photographers, editors, and content experts.
Based in Sydney, the six‑month paid traineeship will provide one emerging photographer with practical experience covering live sport and developing the technical, editorial, and storytelling skills required of professional sports photographers. The trainee will work alongside award‑winning Getty Images photographers with experience covering some of the world’s major sporting events, including Getty Images Staff Sports Photographer and Nikon Ambassador Hannah Peters.
The selected trainee will also work alongside Getty Images editors and production teams, gaining experience across the company’s unparalleled global distribution network and editorial photography workflow, from editing, captioning, and metadata management to image transmission and global distribution. Through real‑world assignments and events coverage, they will learn how content is created, edited, and delivered to customers around the world in near real time while upholding Getty Images’ strict editorial standards.
Nikon Australia will support the traineeship by providing the selected trainee with professional Nikon cameras and lenses for use throughout the programme.
Cassie Trotter, Senior Director for Editorial, APAC at Getty Images, said: “Australia has an extraordinary sporting calendar and a strong tradition of sports photography. This traineeship is about giving an emerging photographer the opportunity to learn the profession by doing it, working alongside Getty Images’ photographers and editors, covering live events and understanding what it takes to create editorial content at speed and to the standards our global customers expect.”
Hannah Peters, Staff Sports Photographer for Getty Images and Nikon Ambassador, said: “So much of sports photography is learned by being there, watching how experienced photographers anticipate the action, position themselves for moments that may last only a second and look beyond the obvious to tell the wider story. I’m looking forward to witnessing the trainee gain that same practical experience, develop their own instincts and begin to find their own style and place in the industry.”
James Murray, Managing Director, Nikon Australia, said: “At the heart of our brand is a commitment to supporting photographers at every stage of their careers. We're delighted to partner with Getty Images on this traineeship, which offers one talented photographer a rare opportunity to gain hands‑on professional experience throughout a thrilling summer of sport, learning directly from some of the world's leading photographers at Getty Images”
